At Phillip Island
Birdwatchers will love Rhyll Inlet on the
north coast, where you can spot a host of
wading birds such as spoonbills, oyster
catchers, herons and egrets as well as rare
bird life. Swan Lake is an important habitat
for black swans.
Some 120,000 short-tailed shearwater (muttonbirds)
arrive at Phillip Island every September
after an arduous 8,000 kilometre journey
from the Bering Strait in the Arctic Circle.
From September to May, the evening skies
darken as they return from feeding out to
sea and the shores awaken to the raucous
sounds of squabbling and cackling.
Phillip Island has several
outstanding dive
sites. Favourites include the Pinnacle, a
granite rock swarming with fish life, and
Collins Cave with its towering vertical
walls, its swim-throughs and its profusion
of fish and crayfish.
Night diving on a
giant wrecked ship is also spectacular.
As well as one of Australia's best known
wildlife havens, Phillip Island also offers
world-class interactive visitor centres, and
even a Grand Prix Circuit hosting
world
championship motorcycle events.
Phillip Island offers some of the best
beaches in Victoria including Smith's Beach.
The coast line that faces Bass Strait is
best for surfing, boarding and
sailing,
while the beaches to the north are best for
fishing, swimming and
boating.
