Mackay has 3 major shopping centers with more than 350 specialty stores. Quality art and craft galleries are throughout the city as well as its outlying areas. The Regional Art Gallery and Museum located in the city centre hosts major national and international art exhibitions.

A visitor to Mackay will be spoilt for choice when it comes to dining with the multitude of multicultural restaurants and cafes in the city and its suburbs. The botanical gardens just south of the city centre and developed in 2003, are a must see for the diverse range of vegetation.

On the doorstep of Mackay is the Great Barrier Reef and a world renown rainforest. That perfect postion combined with 31 different beaches to explore offers a wide variety of attractions and activities for everyone to experience and enjoy - diving, snorkelling, swimming, windsurfing, eco tours and fishing just to name a few.

In Mackay itself there are 3 excellent golf courses to experience with a stunning resort course just a short drive north. During the sugar crushing season the local mill offers tours to show how the industry works.

Take a drive out to the hinterlands and the mining communities to get a clear picture of the pioneer history of this area. Worth the visit.
